Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD Symptoms & Treatment Strategies

A common neurodevelopmental condition that manifests itself mostly among youth and in some cases well into adulthood in the form of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity is known as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

ADHD is characterized into three types based on the prevalent symptoms.

  • Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Characterized by struggle to follow instructions, stay attentive, and organize tasks.
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Characterized by impulsive behavior accompanied by hyperactivity without significant signs of inattention.
  • Combined Presentation: Characterized by having symptoms of Predominantly Inattentive Presentation and Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation.

Common symptoms of ADHD include difficulty focusing and maintaining attention in scheduled tasks, frequent careless mistakes, forgetfulness in instructions, being easily distracted, fidgeting or restlessness, impulsivity, excessive talking or movement, interrupting others, and difficulty waiting for turns. These symptoms can impact academic performance, interpersonal relationships, and daily activities.
